becoming attached to people youve never met IRL
I found out right after thanksgiving that Hugh Kenner died right before thanksgiving. I didnt know Hugh as the world knew him, an Ezra Pound biographer and literary critic. I knew him as one of the writers on BIX. What was BIX? BIX stood for Byte Information exchange (Byte = Byte magazine). It was one of the first commercialized online services (pre-dating AOL, MSN) that started around the same time as CompuServe and GEnie. I logged on in 87 and was active until 96ish. I think its still around or has morphed into something elseI do not know. I knew Hugh from BIX. I helped Hugh transcribe his audio tape recordings of his interview with Chuck Jones for the book he wrote, A portrait of American genius: Chuck Jones. He was a science fiction fan and he was a general nice guy who cared about everything and could debate about anything. I never met him in person, and yet I knew he was all of these things. He became a friend. I wish I had met him in person. And now its too late.
Goodbye, Hugh.
