my head s'plode
I just watched Fahrenheit 9/11 for the first time this evening. It's a great movie. I haven't gone to do the investigation on what's spin and what isn't (except things I definitely know about), yet. But let's say if only 50% of it's not spin....why the hell is anyone still supporting Bush?
It was sickening seeing the images of Iraqi's beating burned, dead U.S. soldiers bodies. It was disturbing listening to Youssef Sleiman address a room full of company executives interested in bidding on contracts on the reconstruction of Iraq say "how do we get a piece of this big action? cause it's big and once the oil starts flowing, it'll be even bigger." It was disturbing just hearing Bush address a crowd of fat cats jokingly say, "some of you are the haves and the rest are the have mores. some of you are called the elite. I like to call you my base." "ha ha" - Doesn't matter to me where or when or what context he said it, it's still disgusting to see someone gloating like that. Screw you. Yes, I recognize that Moore wants me to feel this way...and frankly, in some of these instances, I'm ok with that.
I did not like Moore poking fun at the santa that the troops had at xmas in Iraq. It's not like we can understand how to make things livable when in a tough situation. We don't know and we shouldn't poke fun at any attempts to try to make life as normal as one can while deployed. Coping mechanisms are important and should not be made fun of.
I'm glad I watched it.

Clue-ments:
I didn't get that he was poking fun of santa and the troops. I think he was just showing that the troops were sadly over there for Christmas and then would have to go out and raid houses and abuse the Iraqis (during the holy season).

if our news channels were -allowed to-
show us burning iraqis and dead us solidiers,
i can assure you,
no one would be voting for a man
who wants to continue this war.
the FCC has been pulling out all the stops, lately.

I think it was the music in the background during those scenes that made me think he was being too lighthearted about such a sad subject: xmas in Iraq.

So true, jhimm. *sigh* I wish people would see this film. There are some heartbreaking scenes with a mother whose son was killed in Iraq.

i might have seen it.
if he'd marketed it as an editorial,
or shot a more objective documentary.
as it stands,
i refuse to even indirectly put money in his pocket
or in any way encourage him to do this again.

nbh feels the same way. Moore has said pretty much it's an editorial, but he hasn't done anything to correct those who call it a documentary. I know it's an editorial, so I'm willing to watch it.
