is this wrong?

One of the courses I'm taking this semester for humanities fulfillment is "Intro to Disabilities".

We have an assignment to watch a movie that has main character(s) who are disabled and then write a "movie report". How did the film handle the disability and portray the person, blah blah.

Would it be politically incorrect if I chose Johnny Knoxville's The Ringer?

p.s. if you have any suggestions, that'd be cool.
p.p.s. downside: having to watch a johnny knoxville film.

I think that it could be ok but only if you write if from the following perspective

"How hollywood uses setrotypical representations of the disable for cheap humor and short term financial gain and the effect that this has on societies views of the disabled"

How about that for a line of crap.

How about Fahrenheit 9/11? I think the main character in that is mentally disabled. :)

How about The Bone Collector?

Benny and Joon ?
very mild mental instabilities,
but a very well done film
featuring two very talented [actor/actress]es.

I liked "Children of a Lesser God", which I recommend if you haven't seen it.

How about 'Journeys with George'.

Well, if I understand the assignment, I would think The Ringer doesn't really qualify. The main character isn't actually disabled, after all.

If you can find a copy, and that would be the trick, I would suggest Good Luck with Vincent D'Onofrio and Gregory Hines. D'Onofrio plays a star quarterback-and-asshole whose life falls apart as he lapses into drunken self-pity after an accident on the field leaves him blind. Hines plays the wheelchair-bound nerd who used to tutor him in college, who finds him and badgers him into signing up for a whitewater race on the Rogue river. What I like about it is that it's a movie about two guys with disabilities, but it's a surprisingly light-hearted comedy, and although it does definitely touch on the business of dealing with disability in sometimes rather raw ways, it doesn't get all cloying and sweet about it the supposed nobility of being disabled. Supposedly based on real events, and the two guys who founded a nonprofit for getting disabled people outside their own boundaries on various outdoor adventures.

Or, there's always The Mighty.

Good Luck is available from Netflix.

Paul - I've had that on my netflix for awhile. Great suggestion. However, is there a main character (or two) that it's about? Or is it a whole team?

Jay - Seen The Bone Collector. I'm trying to pick a movie I haven't seen before. Thanks, tho. Hey, I liked Fahrenheit 9/11.

Posted by: cf at March 24, 2006 02:28 PM

jhimm - Love that movie!

Posted by: cf at March 24, 2006 03:12 PM

Fritz - Yeah, saw it.....I think I liked it.....

Posted by: cf at March 24, 2006 03:13 PM

Ulrika - It would not work for the assignment, absolutely. I was not serious. Both the movies you mention are available via netflix!! They sound good.

Posted by: cf at March 24, 2006 03:14 PM

HP - HAHAHAHA. I had to look that one up....

Posted by: cf at March 24, 2006 03:17 PM

cf: It's still in our queue, too. :-)

However I did see a trailer a while back, and I'm pretty sure there is a central character.

(It's a documentary, you know that, right?)

Edward Scissorhands **or** Boxing Helena.

The Elephant Man

I'd have to second Murderball. A friend of mine is/was the competition commissioner for Wheelchair Rugby and has a number of great stories about it.

As I recall there are a couple of focus characters, so that should work for your report.
