bleah
You know why Americans are so obese? Because all of the coupons are for crap, high calorie food. We're getting our food for cheap at the expense of our health. I'm sitting here going through the mail that's been piled for a few days and I decided to look through the coupon fliers. Holy shit. Domino's. KFC. Turkey Hill brand ice cream at the stop and shop. Wonder bread.
Good god.
I'm not one for new year's resolutions cause it seems to me that one should try to change for the better any day of the year. However, after the past two weeks of too much food, parties and such, I'm definitely getting my butt back to the gym tomorrow. Course, this also means that it'll be crowded. But I suspect after three weeks it'll be back to it's normal pulse.

Clue-ments:
imHo,
americans are fat
because we just don't care.
it's not ignorance
or marketing
or corporate america trying to make us fat.
we're fat
because we can't be bothered
to -not- be fat.

jhimm - I'm the first person who refuses to blame corporate america or anyone else trying to make us fat besides ourselves.
What does "don't care" and "can't be bothered" mean to you?

Canadians have the same thing. Coupons for cheap FAT food, but not many for good stuff and not that many sales on good stuff (except for meat.. we get great meat specials here).
I'm a "can't be bothered type". I have to be in the mood to cook or I won't. Thing is, I'd go hungry before I'd go get fast fat food. Heh. That's not a good plan either.
I compromise a bit by searching high & low for stuff that takes 10 mis to a half hour MINIMUM to cook. Good stuff, though. And honestly.. vegetables cook fast so there's no excuse unless you're medically banned from vegetables for awhile like I am (but I only have 2 wks of the veggie ban left).
It's laziness.

Newt - Yeah, I haven't eaten (except for a few rare occurrences) fast food in over six years. And when I have, I've regretted it.
I'm not sure if I'm either type. It's a struggle every day for me to eat right and get moving.

According to Sportacus himself you shouldn't feel too bad about having the occasional burger: "If you only eat healthy food, that is too much."
Happy New Year! :-)

TJ - Hey there! Happy New Year! The link you provided goes on to link to an article about the dems figuring out how to get to the GOP base.....

I couldn't skip a burger every now and then. It's just not in me to skip something so damned good. BUT... I can't eat greasy food at all without pain & discomfort, so right there... you know my idea of a burger is likely reasonably healthy.
There's very little fast food that I actually like these days. I do have a wicked good pita joint near my house though. I could live there.. in the store.
I tend to pick the less greasy, somewhat more healthy foods when I'm in a fast food place. It usually works out to be pretty easy.

Which link is that? I wonder if you get a different version of that page on your side of the "pond"...

Newt - I can't pass up a good burger either, it tastes so good. But I wouldn't call McDonald's a good burger. I could pass there. A good middle eastern fast food place nearby....oh man, that would kick ass. One of my complaints about the downtown area of the town we live in is that the restaurants are crap (except for 1). We need better restaurants, dammit!!

You'd love my area, CF.. just up on the main drag that crosses my street, I have NUMEROUS restaurants. A few are crap like A&W and I think there's a McD's around here somewhere, but the majority are ones like the pita shop or sushi joints, thai food joints or 2 or 3 lebanese-ish places and not less than 2 chinese buffet style joints.
The majority of foodsies near my house are pretty good if you're a health-conscious diner-outer.

Newt - that sounds so good. Course, if nbh and I lived _in_ Boston then we probably would have better choices within walking distance of home..

As the stater of all things Icelandic, Sportacus is Icelandic! He's the main character (and played by the creater of) in the kid's tv show, Lazytown.

CF - "don't care" and "can't be bothered" are probably just fancy ways of saying "apathy due to ignorance".
Posted by: jhimm at January 5, 2007 08:35 AM
Sue - Hey! Lazytown sounds like my kind of show...
Btw, TJ is my friend from Iceland I told you about who owns a guest house with his wife and kids up by Myvatn.

jhimm - With all of the news articles about "the latest studies", are people really ignorant?
Posted by: cf at January 5, 2007 12:08 PM
jhimm - p.s. er, I mean ignorant about healthy lifestyle choices.....
Posted by: cf at January 5, 2007 12:08 PM
you're making the faulty assumption
that average americans -read-.
