on my mind

Am I going to be one of those women, who when they reach menopause decide that Menopause: The Musical is a good show to go see? When I'm a senior citizen, am I going to start using shower caps to protect my blue hair from the rain? When I'm a senior citizen, will I only want to travel in senior citizen tours? When I'm a senior citizen, will I start going to all you can eat buffets (I don't now) at 4 in the afternoon?

I'm not sure why I'm thinking about growing old. Maybe it was the old woman wearing a shower cap at the logan express last week. Maybe it was hanging out with grandma over thanksgiving.

But man, I'm pretty sure that if any of these things happen, please shoot me.

i upset nbh's grandma

I didn't mean to, but I upset nbh's grandma on Thanksgiving. She told everyone ahead of time that before anyone could eat we would stand around the dining room table while a prayer was recited. Well, once everyone had arrived, the turkey was cut, nobody was leading the charge to say a prayer. I was hungry. And we all know how I get when I'm hungry.

So, I went into the kitchen and said, "Let's get this prayer said so we can eat." Apparently I didn't say it in a tone that made grandma laugh. Apprently I said it in a derisive tone and made fun of her desire to say a prayer.

*sigh* After I'd had some food in me (having learned a long time ago to keep my mouth shut if I'm hungry cause I tend to say mean things. see above.) I found grandma in the kitchen and apologized. All is now good.

kiss my ass

Great, so not only are the christian right advocating that a marriage is between a man and a woman, but now, they're advocating that a marriage must include children, according to this article.

"The church should insist that the biblical formula calls for adulthood to mean marriage and marriage to mean children. This reminds us of our responsibility to raise boys to be husbands and fathers and girls to be wives and mothers. God's glory is seen in this, for the family is a critical arena where the glory of God is either displayed or denied. It is just as simple as that.

The church must help this society regain its sanity on the gift of children. Willful barrenness and chosen childlessness must be named as moral rebellion. To demand that marriage means sex--but not children--is to defraud the creator of His joy and pleasure in seeing the saints raising His children. That is just the way it is. No kidding."

When will this be written into the gay marriage amendment??

the gluttony has ended for now

We're back from Cleveland. I'm not sure I can stay at chris's grandma's again. Allergy central. As in, mold and dust. And the well water...stinky.

Anyway, in order for me to be able to see Peter and Rebecca tonight, I gotta hit the books hard today. Especially since finals start in the next week...so, I'll update you later on our Turkey weekend extravaganza.

We had NO leftover turkey for sammiches on Friday. That made me sad. I love leftover turkey sammiches. I joked that we should cook another turkey for the purpose of leftovers. Lots of family showed up. It was cool.

If you are in the D.C. area, or have friends/family who do or can even find a cheap flight, think about doing this on Inauguration Day.

i can't believe i was asked this question

"Did you try sending e-mail to the person from a different computer?" - Help Desk

*blink* *blink* "No and I'm not going to cause that has nothing to do with it."

This was in response to my call about a bounced e-mail (we're having some issues with the secure e-mail handshake between us and a vendor).

Happy thanksgiving, folks. We're heading to nbh's grandma's for Thanksgiving. See ya in awhile.

i'm in love

The last time I went up to Burlington, VT for biz I had no time to even have dinner except room service and then bed. And when I've gone skiing up in that area I've stayed at B&B's that are out in the middle of nowhere. So this time we got up there in time for a nice dinner at smokejacks. Man, was it good. And then we walked around. I love Burlington. I want nbh and I to go up for a trip. He needs to see it. My hotel room overlooked Lake Champlain, too, and that was georgous in the morning. Yay.

alternative to turkey

I've got a suggestion for my vegetarian friends for Thanksgiving:

ice cream

The dunkin' donuts near my work is also a baskin robbins and I noticed this in the freezer as I was standing in line. I had to take a picture.

p.s.

While in VT, I'm also going to get to ride a segway *again*. Yay.

political activism...progress is slowly being made

In my quest to become more politically active, I've been investigating just where I want to spend my time and effort (and money, prolly, too). I'm still researching. I do know that I'm not the kind of person who could join the Republican party and try to work change from within. I submitted to drafthoward.com. I liked Dean. Will I change my voter registration to Democrat? Will I join the Democratic party? I don't know yet.

The next week and a half will be busy. Business trip to VT (not gonna go ski...wah), Thanksgiving in Cleveland with non-blogging husband's grandma, etc. So, my posting will be light, in case you even care. :-)

it's noon and i wanna be home. now.

Things have not being going well today. I dropped my wedding band in the sink. It managed to fit itself between the stopper and the pipe but not go in. Staring at me with defiance. Then my early train was cancelled. So I got to work a LOT later than planned. Then I spilled coffee on my desk (not on the laptop, thank goodness). Then I was in back to back meetings. Which is torture enough as it is.

Oh my god. I kid you not. A woman at work today was wearing these:

ewww

I did have my camera with me, however, by the time I got to even stalk the abominable snowshe, she had left for the day and I had to leave to catch my train (crazy, crazy day).

one is the loneliest number

So, I read today that Tom Hanks could play the lead in the film version of Dan Brown's, "The Da Vinci Code". Which then reminded me of how lonely I am. I'm lonely because I did not care for the novel at all. And I seem to be the only one. It's a hard life. Nobody to talk to. Not even share a cup o' joe with. Is anyone else out there like me?

But, I won't spoil anything for those who are or will be reading it as to why I disliked it. Hence, the extended entry.

Here's my big deal with the book:

You start out with a strong, intelligent female character with a doctorate in symbolism. She rescues the guy out of the Louvre, and then for the rest of the novel has to sit back while not only the guy she rescued from the Louvre talks down to her, but an old guy with a plane too. And, her father had her doing puzzles since she was a child and I believe a number of the puzzles were designed by her father, so why is it that she can't seem to solve any of them? I don't know, I think I tuned out at that point and was just skimming to see how it would end. Anyway, I think the part that put me over the edge was when the old guy who owns the plane starts explaining to her what iambic pentameter is. Which any freakin' high school student should know. I found it hard to believe she was that ignorant. And I just couldn't focus anymore....

to imo or not imo, that is the question

I've always disliked the use of "IMO" or "IMHO". You're stating your opinion, why put those fucking statements at the beginning or the end of your opinion? It's redundant. And no, I don't believe that it "softens" what you're trying to say. Am I alone in this?

Thanks to christina and her alert shopper news, I now own a cute set of pajamas with Hello Kitty snowboarding on them. And they're polar fleece.

And guess what? I have to be in Burlington, VT for a Monday meeting. Gosh, I guess I'll have to head up Saturday so I can get some skiing in on Sunday....hehehehe.

HEY

HEY! Nobody tried to guess why we had a crappy Harlequin movie on our TiVo suggestions.

I expected Elke, at least, would say something. What, do you have more important things to do?

Well, here's my guess: I have been TiVo'ing Regency House Party. I think that's the culprit. And I forgot to link to this old article: "My TiVo Thinks I'm Gay"

Anyway, I need to get offline and go do some homework. Or housework. And exercise. We're going to summerblues and head pigeons tonight. Yay, margaritas!

the first snow

We had our first snow yesterday/this morning. We probably had about 3 inches dumped. It's beautiful. However, it's mid-afternoon and the sun is out, the skies are clear and the snow is already melting. It makes me think of getting out to ski. It makes me think of snuggling up with a blanket and a good book. With the kitties. I still don't have all the winter gear out yet, so that'll be a task this weekend. Mmmm.

cyclical emotional bitch slaps

The recent activities on my blog have reminded me that, as usual, things are cyclical. Just when you rest on your laurels, thinking, "I've got a lot of lessons learned in life so far. I can take a rest." An emotional bitch slap occurs. I've had problems (obviously) in the past with people having heated arguments/discussions around me. I definitely dealt with this many years ago (yay, therapy). I’m not going to go into why. But the recent discussions reminded me that it's still there. It doesn’t come up all the time anymore. It doesn’t drive my life. It’s a part of me, but not really a focus anymore. And, Jenn, your usual philosophy on learning about yourself on a continual basis has been a little ignored lately. So, I’m going to remind you that you always have something new to learn about yourself and stay in touch with your insides, will ya? Of course, the ironic thing (not in the Alanis Morrisette way - which isn't) is, I'm not someone who shies from a heated discussion.

I've had an Ulrika,er,Eureka moment with all of this: It's my blog! It's not BIX/MSN! I'm free! I don't have to moderate! I don't have to do jack shit! I'm not responsible for anyone's actions! You're big kids, do what you will. Have fun. Just know, I love you all. Smoochies.

calgon take me away

My tooth is still hurting me. Thank god for soup and Vitamin I (Ibuprofen).

Anyway, these two things made me laugh and I wanted to share them with you.

1. We have the setting for "make suggestions" turned on the TiVo. I'm amused by one of the suggestions it recorded today: "A Change of Place" - Starring *Rick Springfield*. "An art-history student poses as her twin, a Paris model whose boss suspects her of theft. From the Harlequin romance."

Okay folks, can you guess why it thought this was a good suggestion for us? I actually think I can...

2. My significant other, not happy with my mood swings, bought me a mood ring
the other day so he would be able to monitor my moods. When I'm in a good mood, it turns green. When I'm in a bad mood, it leaves a big red mark on his forehead.

history of my addiction to online communities

Back in 1987, I was a co-moderator for the science fiction conference on BIX (Byte Information eXchange – Byte magazine’s “GEnie” or “Compuserve”) with my mom. From ’87 until roughly ’93, I spent many hours, almost daily, conversing with folks online. I loved it. Many of the people on it I already knew in person from science fiction conventions, but I also made new friends – including my friend Joe here in Boston. My time spent online dwindled and then an opportunity came to co-moderate with mom, again, and start the sf/fantasy area on this new thing called MSN. Microsoft is evil. When our contract was up after 1.5 years, we did not renew.

And to be honest, I was glad for it. Why? Cause I got tired of moderating people’s arguments. I got tired of being called a “censor” when I removed people’s comments that violated the user agreements. I got tired of having to come up with topic after topic that would generate discussion. I just wanted to go back to enjoying science fiction, instead of feeling like I had to work for it.

And frankly, my career started taking off and I enjoyed it. I also liked the travel and money. And it made it harder for me to take the online stuff as seriously as I was being paid (peanuts) to do. So, after the MSN fiasco, I stopped with the online communities.

Flash forward to last year when I decided to start a blog. I wanted fluff. I wanted to post things that just weren’t serious. But in the past few months, I’m finding I’m spending more and more time online and it feels like BIX all over again. Was I getting a readership? Did I want a readership? Yeah, I wanted my friends to read what was going on in my life and possibly comment. But did I want to advertise my blog to the world to get people to read it? Did I want to start re-creating “home” again? How can I become involved in the blogsphere but not sacrifice my IRL (In Real Life)? How can I enjoy the interesting discussions on blogs and maintain a healthy blog/life balance? I don’t have any answers to those questions right now. I’m not even sure where I’m going with this…but I just felt a need to explain to everyone my history with online communities and why I stopped for a long time. They took over my life and I’m not sure I want that again. No, this is not prompted by the recent flame war. It’s something that has been on my mind for a few months....

Update: I was reminded it was '86 that things started. And I'd like to say that my friends who work at Microsoft are not evil. I didn't mean you. I love you. :-)
Update to my update: I doubt I would have done things differently. I made a lot of long-time friends, always had people to visit when travelling and enjoyed the discourse.

Questions or Comments: Hello,I''m amused to find out through a Wall Street Journal article that you have internal names for the types of desirable customers and their shopping preferences. For example, "Barrys" tend to be "enthusiasts of action movies and cameras".So, of the three profiles mentioned, I didn''t see myself. And, amused by these names, I''d love to know what my internal name is for my profile:High-income female, no kids, who loves to consume mini electronic gadgets and DVD''s.I look forward to hearing your response,Jennifer XXXXXX

i think best buy can just blow me

So, it wasn't bad enough that Best Buy tried a bait and switch on my friend, summerblues.

Now, check out this WSJ article. I wonder what they would call my shopping type. I bet they don't have one for me (I'm going to write them and find out! yeah!). High-income female who consumes electronic gadgets and movies.

Store clerks receive hours of training in identifying desirable customers according to their shopping preferences and behavior. High-income men, referred to internally as Barrys, tend to be enthusiasts of action movies and cameras. Suburban moms, called Jills, are busy but usually willing to talk about helping their families. Male technology enthusiasts, nicknamed Buzzes, are early adopters, interested in buying and showing off the latest gadgets.

Update: I sent off my e-mail to them. If I don't hear back within the 72 hours they said I would, I'll just send them snail mail.

No, I do not get off on going to the dentist. :-) They couldn't make a diagnosis for my tooth. They suspect that I'm having a relapse of the infection from last year. Considering all the stress I've had over the past two weeks...my immune system is probably down...whatever. They're putting me on penicillin. We'll see. Just make the pain stop.

computer validation and auditing in e-voting

I hope people can point me towards sanity on this issue. So far, I seem to be the only one talking about it (see title of this entry).

There are many, many consulting firms out there that will perform audits and computer validation for manufacturing hardware and software in pharma/biotech companies. These are all done according to FDA regulations. It's called GMP. Good Manufacturing Practices. Equally so, there are rules that apply to more than just systems dealing with the manufacture of drugs. They also apply to document management systems within the company to clinical trial software collecting clinical trial data. And, they get audited too.

Why aren't we advocating doing the same for e-voting hardware and software?

I don't have a full outline of what to do, obviously you don't want to get into conflict of interests or "I'll pay you a ton of money to make sure this validation is correct" or even each county of registrars could interpret the regulations differently.

I'm already mulling my own thoughts on some of these things and pros and cons. But remember: a) I haven't fully articulated my idea yet, just testing the waters and b) where's your idea?

activism

In order for me to figure out where I want to put my time, effort and money, I need to figure out what is worth doing. It irritates me that Bush got elected and they were smarter than me. So, now it's time to get out of the spin, rhetoric and partisian crap and focus on what's real.

I think the electoral college should go the way of the dodo. I think that if I'm going to support a party, I need to register not as an independent but with a party. Hmm....that's it so far.

pork, the other white meat

Kevin, April, Joe and Cindy came over Saturday night for a potluck dinner. Joe and I have to mutually agree not to talk politics because there are a number of items we do not agree with...but, it happened. Very little was said about Kerry/Bush, actually. A lot of it was just various subjects and how we felt about them. I don't think anyone ended up hating anyone else (I did confirm this with everyone..).

I made a Tuscan pork tenderloin from a Cooks Illustrated recipe and I made creme brulee. Note to self: never, ever make two things that take at least 6 hours each to make. That was stupid. Kevin & April brought this great green bean dish (spicy, tomatoes, spinach...mmm...) and Joe & Cindy brought a baked brie w/currants and walnuts. Yeah.

The rest of my weekend was sleeping in, doing homework (and more homework...and housework..) and we managed to get out and see The Incredibles. Man, Pixar just can't make a bad film. And then it was back to homework. I didn't go online for most of the weekend so I could focus on schoolwork.

things were going fine yesterday

Things were going fine yesterday until 4:00 when I was blindsided by a co-worker and their manager on something that wasn't my responsibility, but they apparently felt it was. Just that morning, the co-worker, their tech lead (not manager) and I had a discussion and action plan to deal with a problem. To then have the co-worker come over with the big guns in front of my boss for something that the person was supposed to have already done really pissed me off. I will have to talk to the co-worker on Monday to basically say, "Hey, if you needed my help or felt that you couldn't do the task, all you needed to do was ask. Instead, I felt blindsided by you coming over with your boss and her accusing me of not doing what you agreed to do." Anyway, despite my anger, I was pretty cool. I basically answered the question of the boss and just said, "We could go into details, why, who, what and when, but this is urgent and that can be discussed later. I'll go do x, y and z (what the co-worker was supposed to do) and you go do a, b and c and let's get this fixed."

However, I missed the earlier train and had NO time to pick up anything from Rosie's Bakery in order to make the later train. Waaah.

Anybody familiar with document version control? Good.

I sat in a meeting today where the facilitator suggested that instead of using the version control functionality for the minutes, we just load each minutes file with the meeting date appended on it (e.g. minutes 04nov04.doc) as their own separate entries in the document management system. So, instead of what we HAD been doing where you've got "Minutes" as the item you click on which should give you the most recent version (and if you want earlier versions you can click on version and see the minutes with the date meeting on them), you'd have one entry in the folder per meeting.

I said, "I don't like the idea at all." "Why?" "Because it's a document management system and that's not the purpose of document management and version control." "But you have to name the file each time with the date." "You'd have to do that with your approach too. Lemme show you how it's done." I then proceeded to show them how I do it and the light bulb went on. I even volunteered to train people, but for the love of god, do not make each version it's own damn entry in the folder.

And, for the love of god, why is this an agenda item anyway???

the redskins lost for nothing

I’ve been thinking about all of this…especially this morning as I drove in and listened to NPR. Here are my thoughts:

1. Bush won, folks. Decisively. However, since I’m a democrat and therefore a complainer according to stereotypes: I blame the media, I blame Osama and his fucking videotape that sparked fear in american’s hearts (cause fear is all we’re dealing with now folks) and so they voted for Bush, I blame myself for not trying harder and recognizing some of these things before now.
2. I’ve made this observation on a number of friend’s blogs recently and decided to post it here. The core demographic of the Bush voters is christian, white, pro-life, anti-gun control, anti-gay anything. I’m not saying all people who fit this profile vote for Bush, I’m talking only about people who voted for Bush. They don’t care that he’s fucked this country over. They see someone they can identify with – and with the NPR report yesterday morning that I heard on exit polls, apparently the majority of people were concerned about moral values. As in, they see the list of things I’ve mentioned above and that is why they voted for Bush. They actually believe that because he’s *said* these things that then he’s a moral person (yeah, right).
3. What to do now? Support the democratic party for the next four years. I’m going to look for resources and ways to help that will make sense and are good and smart areas to put money and effort into.
4. I’m convinced that the dem’s need to find a southerner for their candidate in ’08 (however much I’d like to see Hillary run). Despite the dems thinking that they *can* win without some of the southern states.
5. I agree with jhimm (and I hope he doesn’t mind me posting his whole comment):
"i seriously wonder
if the DNP will ever be competative
at the presidential level
unless they find a way
to make their positions
on hot-button issues
like abortion, homosexuals, etc.
look like moral positions.
they -are- moral positions,
but the DNP is so paranoid
about its core demographic
getting hysterical about church and state issues
that they're unable
to ever couch their arguments
as moral arguments."

And dudes, nbh’s family is in Ohio and guess where we’re going for thanksgiving? I do know that at least one of his family members there voted for Kerry...

i hear new zealand is a nice place to live

Seriously, tho. I worked 12 hours straight today. I have barely read/listened to any news. So, like, maybe I'll be able to process this tomorrow.

I do have one statement: Where the fuck are the other 40% of eligiblle voters? Asshats. Screw you. If I hear you bitching, I'm going to bitch slap you.

just found out

I just now found out Kerry conceded. Yes, I've been holed up with a team of people all day. I'm sad.

I haven't even had a chance to fully process everything since going to bed last night...so like, no rants for now.

voted already

Update: I forgot to mention that ignorance still abounds. During the past four years, how could one not know what a chad is? Overhead while waiting in line this morning: "Drawing a line between two boxes, that's stupid, who thought of that? No wonder why Florida had such problems." Uh, Florida had chad problems, moron. For those that don't know, in MA, I love the way we mark our ballots. You take a permanent marker and have to draw a line across. No chads.

I love being at the voting booth first thing in the morning. It makes me feel patriotic all day long. We arrived at 7a.m. when they opened, and there was already a huge line. I think we waited 30 minutes. We bought donuts from the local high school kids. Non-blogging husband had a bavarian kreme and I had chocolate with sprinkles. Mmmm.....donuts.

i'm sorry you lost yesterday, redskins

But, I'm happy you did. Apparently there is a predictor as to who will win the Presidency and it has to do with football and the Washington Redskins. Yes, "the result of Washington's last home game before presidential Election Day has been an accurate predictor of who'll win the White House -- accurate without fail -- since 1936. That covers 17 straight elections across eight decades.".

Heh. I'm still not holding my breath. I'm not very optimistic. On the other hand, here's hoping Bush, Jr. emulates his father and has only one term. Honor thy father, willya?

On a TOTALLY unrelated, topic: I just want everyone to know that I had this idea for my company over a year ago. Very cool and I hope other companies try this out.
