mamacita begins

When non-blogging husband's mom arrives it's like a tornado has hit our house. I love her so much. She cracks me up. She always arrives with stuff. She brings food with her (she drives up from VA). She brings "things she saw at the store that she thought we might find useful". She brings stuff for the cat (I wrote 'cats' first...*sigh*). She also brought a new cat with her cause she got him a few weeks ago and didn't want to leave her alone with her other cat for a week. And the talking. She loves to talk.

So, I present to you, mamacita as a South Park character:

it is freakin' done

I just turned in my microeconomics final. A shout out to mess for the help today.

That was the hardest and most unrewarding class ever. I hates it.

too funny

In an e-mail to me today (after much bantering back and forth with the individual):

"Reason 45,645 why you need to convince them to allow me to work for you.

Reason 645,232 why working together we would form an unholy alliance that would force reason and best practices to be implemented correctly, much like the stellar work done to motivate the contractors building the death star."

I'm flattered.

laziness

Last night we went to Pottery Barn for Kids to pick up the group shower present for a co-worker's party next week. While waiting for them to get something out of the back room, they had a demo of a battery operated bubble blower on the counter. Gone is the opportunity to figure out how to blow out air at different pressures in order to create a bunch of little bubbles or one big one. Oh well.

In the meantime, after doing a little googling, I found others who agree with me re: the whole Shakespeare/Deadwood thing. From Ian McShane: Language is language. Especially when he uses the vernacular in the midst of these long, complicated 19th century monologues - because it's almost like Shakespeare in terms of the complexity of the dialogue and the thoughts behind it - and that's from his days as an English professor.

question

Should a man's cologne smell like baby powder? I just can't help but feel this is wrong. This guy I was standing behind on the train this morning reeked of it. I'm not talking, he changed the baby's diaper, headed out the door to catch the train and got some baby powder on his shirt. I'm talking reeked.

And about Deadwood. Last night was a perfect example of what I've been thinking about the writing and acting on the show for awhile now. Deadwood dialogue and acting, to me, is like listening to Shakespeare, but in the Old West. There's a certain cadence to speaking Shakespeare (I could never get it right) and I find that it appears in Deadwood. Anybody else feel that way?

too many notes

Yesterday is the start of the next two weeks of too much to do, folks! We headed over to Kevin and April's for some lunch and then to Bob and Donna's to go on their food taste test for their wedding banquet! I can assure you that the food will be good, regardless of what they select. I cannot divulge anything else.

Mamacita (nbh's mother) will arrive Tuesday for a week of silliness. I'm taking Thursday and Friday off. I did not think about timing when we were discussing dates, but my finals are during her visit. My goal is to select one of the days I have off to just closet myself up and finish everything.

It has been suggested that nbh's nickname be changed to nbhh. Non-Blogging House Husband. *snort*

What else.....not much. So ....yeah. Um. Oh, from my new office I can see the soda vending machine every time I look up from my monitor. Our offices are mostly glass - for example the door and the wall the door is on is floor to ceiling glass. The machine taunts me daily. I don't drink much soda. Haven't for many years. When I did, I loved Dr. Pepper. Loved it. And so what does the vending machine have? Diet and regular Dr. Pepper. The Diet Dr. Pepper tastes like the real thing, the commercials are so spot on. And everytime I look up and see the Diet Dr. Pepper, I can remember the taste. And then I want it. Oh, do I want it. Finally, on Friday, I succumbed and had a DDP. It was good. I'm so weak.

i love the sun

This week the weather has been georgous. I've been wearing skirts and sandals to work all week. Except today, it was wicked cold when I headed into work. Non-blogging husband has been dropping me off at the train station in the morning and then I've been walking home in the evening (there's no way I could get up early enough in the morning to walk to the train station...:-).

And man, did anyone watch Survivor tonight?

Dude. I'm sooooo cheering for Stephenie! And what a great thing with Janus quitting. Well, Greg, yeah, Janus is important to the game....just not the way you were expecting!! hahahaha! Go Stephenie!

f*ing democrats

Senior committee Democrat Alan Mollohan of West Virginia quickly rejected the offer, saying his party would continue blocking the panel from operating unless investigative rules imposed by Republicans were changed.

I've been trying to find time today to write a letter to the five democrats on the committee to tell them they're a bunch of asshats for not accepting this offer.

I'm not saying that the switcheroo on the investigative rules aren't important. I'm saying: Pick the right f*ing battle. Get some of these Republican power abusers investigated so their hypocrisy can be trumpeted even more to the American people. DeLay, especially, needs to be investigated for jeebus sake.

sleeping beauty

Oh. My. God. Many of my friends know that I snore. They've either heard about it (get it?) or they've actually experienced it first hand.

Well, apparently there is a device that is supposed to use electric shock therapy in order to get someone to stop snoring. Uh...I love you all dearly, but don't even THINK about getting it for nbh's birthday. I am amused and horrified by this at the same time.

i heart my,er,our honda civic hybrid

So, betnoir posted a fun article about how people are doing anything to get their hands on a hybrid vehicle. And it got me all nostalgic, thinking about why we bought our Honda Civic Hybrid two years ago.

See, nbh's car had died a spectacular death. So we needed a replacement. He wanted a hybrid. Me, I wanted a hybrid because money talks. We wouldn't get a deal on price. We knew that. But, I felt as a consumer, if we didn't pay money to show the car manufacturers that people were interested in alternative fuel vehicles, then how would they ever change? Since we could afford one, we decided this would be a good way to show our support.

And so, for the first time, breaking my parents rule of "Never buy a car model it's first year out", we bought the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid. And it was love at first sight. The color. The silence. The feelings of pride that we were trying to do something about the environment in our own small way. Joining our circle of friends who already had Prius hybrids like Kevin and April and our burbclave neighbor Martha. It was cosy.

And as gas prices increase, acceptance and demand for this product increases. Which makes me happy. More will join the fold. And then maybe we can get that hydrogen economy going.

and another view

My friend Dan, sent this article yesterday. Which pretty much says the environment has made a significant turnaround, and we romantic environmentalists need to shift our paradigm. It's a good article. Paul, it also supports the stuff you posted in response to my post.

It gives one a lot to think about.

aiyee

Many who read this already know, but non-blogging husband's last day on the job is today. He quit last week. No idea what he's going to do next beyond some shareware and being a house husband. We can afford the mortgage and food and stuff on my salary, we had done the math last May when he was laid off at his previous company. So we don't have that worry. Although, our standard of living will decrease significantly...

Sometimes you have to stop banging your head against the wall. That's the decision we made after six months of discussions (temporary solutions or ways to approach things didn't work) surrounding the issue.

Life is too short.

Course, this new chapter is kinda scary...:-) But, whatever, I've managed to survive from much, much worse things.

*sigh*

"A landmark study released today reveals that approximately 60 percent of the ecosystem services that support life on Earth – such as fresh water, capture fisheries, air and water regulation, and the regulation of regional climate, natural hazards and pests – are being degraded or used unsustainably."

"The study was compiled by 1,360 scientists from 95 nations who pored over 16,000 satellite photos from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and analyzed statistics and scientific journals."

60%. Jeebus.

snooze alarm

So, MIT is working on an alarm clock that will help those of us who are snooze button abusers. Apparently, when the alarm goes off, the alarm clock rolls off the stand and then rolls far away from the bed.

The thing is, it probably won't work for me. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I tried something like this a long time ago. I put the alarm clock across the room, thinking that once I stood up to turn it off, I'd just go ahead and start my morning. Turns out, didn't work. I would get up, go across the room and hit snooze, and then crawl back into bed. Heh.

road trip!

The cheese factor looks high for this one. Looks like it's about an hour away. That's not bad.....

Monster Mini-Golf
. Maybe we'll take mamacita down there when she's here at the end of the month.

Well, I can't believe it, but my microeconomics professor says that if he were to grade me based on my mid-term score and my participation in class, I'd be getting an A-. I hate this class and yet, I'm getting a good grade. Priceless. The reason why I hate this class is because I'm a detail oriented person. This is all hypotheticals based off of "pick any number and start from there" graphing. Whatever.

that time of year again

I got a mosquito bite last night. First of the season. Seems a little early for them to be out, but whatever. I'm loving the spring weather and driving with the windows rolled down.

And Pepper has decided that peeing right in front of non-blogging husband is okay. By his desk. By the folding chairs. Thank god we have hardwood floors. Although, it will and can take it's toll on them also. We're not sure if it's because she's still freaked out about Cinnamon being gone or if it's old age and bladder control issues. Or both. Yippee. Not.

ahem

Well. What a week. I'm not even sure I know where to begin. No, there is too much, let me sum up. Nah, instead I think I'll just share with you some funny moments in my life recently.

Dilbert moment: We started getting e-mail delivery failures from one of our vendors that we've worked with for four years. We could send from a hotmail account someone had, but not from our company domain. Found out why: Somehow *our* domain got on their spam filter list. BWAHAHAHA. Hotmail. OK. biotechcompanyiworkfor.com. Not okay. Morons.

And things you don't want to hear on your birthday (last Monday):

young co-worker: "Well, the reason why I knew I could ask you about these things is because you're older. I mean, not OOOOLLLD, but older. Please don't be offended."

me: "How old are you?"

yc: "26"

me: "Yeah, okay. I'm older."

bipolar friday

This morning was an extreme low. This afternoon an extreme high. Why? Well, folks, I had my performance review, it was good. Really good. And I got a promotion too.

Jeebus. I'm exhuasted from the roller coaster of emotions today has brought. Later.

cinnamon, r.i.p.

The vet was very cool. We brought him in at 10:30. It was fast and painless. He's in a better place.

Nbh put together a nice little photo album of Cinnamon.

When I look at the past week and think about Cinnamon's behavior, he was on the decline and quickly, even though we didn't realize it until last night.

I sat with Cinnamon on our couch this morning. He curled up next to me and slept a little bit. After awhile, Pepper came up and curled up next to him and they were together like that until we had to leave for the vet. It was cool that Pepper knew.

It's amazing how you can trick yourself, almost. On the drive to the vet, Cinnamon seemed to perk up. I had to keep saying that it's a trick. Cause, it was. God I wish we hadn't of done it. But that's me missing him speaking. It was time. I know that. I'm amazed at how I was thinking about mundane shit while we were at the vets. But I know that I was trying to think about anything else but what was going on.

Pepper hasn't left our sides at all. She can't stand being alone. So, we've been hugging her and loving her. Thanks to everyone who has posted here, called and/or e-mailed us. Hugs.

it's time

I came home last night. Saw the blood on the kitty food dish and knew. We'd had isolated instances over the past months of blood because of the lump on Cinnamon's chin dragging his gums/mouth lower. A drip here and there. But yesterday was...well, it was bad. And it's not any better this morning. And he's thin. Oh so thin.

I was by myself for about an hour last night when I got home, nbh was working late, and I was bawling. For god's sake, he's *purring* still. Couldn't he have the decency to turn that off? It kills me to hear him purr.

We're calling the vet right now to see about an appointment this morning for the long sleep. They open at eight.
