yeesh

Some people are apparently upset about this new Christian video game based off of a book series called Left Behind. Premise from boing boing:

"Imagine: you are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a Christian theocracy, and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission - both a religious mission and a military mission -- to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state - especially moderate, mainstream Christians. Your mission is "to conduct physical and spiritual warfare"; all who resist must be taken out with extreme prejudice."

Well. If you're going to single out and get upset about this particular video game for being bigoted and violent, why aren't you upset about Grand Theft Auto? Either you're against bigotry and violence in video games or not. It's not a pick and choose kind of thing, yanno?

Now, the sheer irony of a violent Christian video game doesn't escape me (despite the loss of the sense of humor).

I just can't get upset over this. Because I'm not upset that there are video games like GTA out there. If I was upset about GTA, then I would have every right to be upset about this game also and any of it's ilk.

And hey, what about the alien "forerunners" in Halo, they're extremely religious and want to kill all humans...how's that for bigotry and violence! ;-)

lost....

I seem to have lost my sense of humor. If you see it, check the tag to make sure it's mine and if you could take care of it until you can get it to me, I'd appreciate it.

And the following seems fitting for today. Last night I turned on "Last Comic Standing". It's a reality show to find, well, the "next, great" comedian. I'm not sure what the final prize is, but it's been fun catching some of the jokes:

You know those people who say "God works in mysterious ways"? What they're really saying is "God just crapped all over me".

bootiful day

We're going to see a matinee of XMEN III with Donna and Bob and then later this evening a few more friends will join us for a bbq. Mmm. I've got chicken boob marinating in the fridge. It's going to be yummy.

It's so nice out today. I've already been out and about grocery shopping (mmm...whole foods still has strawberries on sale) and running errands. I've got some homework I should do before we go see the movie, but it's hard to concentrate.

Chris's bro and gfriend were supposed to come up from New York but they bailed on us. Waahh. Haven't seen them in awhile.

It seems as though my vacation time is already used up and I haven't even had the vacations yet. The life of a wage slave.

Anyway, off to work on some statistics homework....ugh.

excise your demons

I was reading this article and this phrase jumped out at me. *snort*

"The courts' involvement may deliver a victory to tax-cutting Republicans in Washington who are running out of taxes to cut...."

oops

I forgot to post this the other day. Non blogging husband was reading an article on cnn.com and saw that there was something wrong with the potential date range that this photo could have been taken...

the stupidity. it burns us. again.

Via betnoir.

It looks like it's legit, as there is a video from the protest in Indiana. However, if you watch the video the woman doesn't turn the sign over....real or not, it's hilarious.

this is especially for mess

Top Ten Tuesdays: What Are We Putting in our PowerPoint Presentations?

My favs:
10) A wealth of sentence fragments, improper punctuation, and typos to inspire the sales force
9) Venn diagram displaying suspected movers of our cheese
8) Clip art of a chainsaw-wielding stick figure decapitating someone putting clip art in their PowerPoint presentation (jenn here: must do this some day)
5) MP3 of “Take This Job and Shove It” along with a scan of our winning lottery ticket

more movie stuff

Non-blogging husband read a quote from a movie critic about the da vinci code movie to me and my reaction was: "Hey, that's one of the reasons why I didn't like the book!"

I don't normally read reviews cause many times they will spoiler in the quote and I hate that. But in this case I decided to check some of these quotes out on rottentomatoes. And oddly enough many of the complaints about the movie _are my complaints about the book_.

I will not be going to see the movie.

I have put some of the quotes in the extended entry so you can get a flavor as to why I didn't like the book. Just in case you, like me, hate reading these things and plan on going to see it or you haven't read the book yet.

"Every time Langdon starts to educate Sophie, the urge to tune out is overwhelming." (He goes to great lengths to point out how intelligent she is and to have her constantly lectured to as tho she was a moron drove me batshit)

"The script explains everything twice, spelling out the big words three times, so that even if you've never heard of Jesus or Mary Magdalene you can still figure out this story."

"A jumble of historical myth, religious symbology and international thriller-action makes for an unwieldy, bloated melodrama."

"A polished affair with moments of interest, but simply far too long, too talky and just not interesting or clever enough to engage let alone entertain."

movies movies movies

We went and saw MI:III. I just love over the top action flicks. I can't help myself. There's some LUDICROUS hollywood spy technology and action scenes, man. I'm still giggling at some of the stuff they did in the movie. I only "recommend" it (netflix) if you like giggling at farcical spy gadgets and action scenes. It could have been edited better and they tried character development (jeebus, don't bother, I didn't go to see a chick flick!). Anyway, there's a party scene at the beginning that plays a littlle clip of "Best of My Love" (iTunes link, btw) by The Emotions. And I realized I must have cheesy music.

I just bought it on iTunes and played it. Nbh looks up and says, "I'd mock you right now, but I just bought some Styx the other day." *laughter*

Anyway, I believe I mentioned here a long time ago that I didn't like The Da Vinci Code book. But I'm sorta curious about seeing the movie. It's got a good cast and who knows, the movie could actually be good. I went trolling over to rottentomatoes to see what people are saying about the movie (17% rating so far, yikes!) and came across this:

"You know a movie's a dud when even its self-flagellating albino killer monk isn't any fun."

HAHAHAHAHAHA

baking with strawberries

Whole Foods has a great deal on strawberries so I bought some and just made a strawberry cobbler. I had planned on posting a picture, but, uh, the pictures do not make it look appetizing. It was good, but it's got a lot of juice. I did not realize that baking with strawberries produces so much extra juice. Grrr. Next time I will just lightly coat the strawberries with the lemon/sugar/flour mixture, instead of using all of it.

I wish this rain would go away. Fortunately, we have not had any flooding issues.

stupidity

Some Democrats are saying that maybe they shouldn't win in November because then the GOP will shoulder the responsibility for Bush's failures until his presidency ends. Oh please, you morons, don't do this. I'm finding it hard to vote for any of you as it is, don't make it worse.

As my mentally disabled foster sister would say, "Dumb spelled backwards is gunky."

jeebus

When you say that the best moment in your presidency so far is something you could have done _without being president_, you have got to be kidding me. Bush could tell you what the worst moment was (9/11), but when it comes to the best all he can think of is catching a big fish. Oh my god, doesn't he listen to the words coming out of his mouth? He can't think of anything he's done, a bill he's signed or anything else besides a fish when he opens his mouth and uses the words "the best moment of all"?

back of the envelope

With gasoline being what it is, I decided to figure out how much it would cost for me to drive to/from work versus public transportation. Oof. This assumes I'm driving the hybrid and gasoline is $3/gallon.

Total per month driving (with company subsidizing the parking garage fees): $203.20 (tolls + gasoline + parking garage)

Total per month public transportation (with company subsidizing the rail/subway/bus all-in-one pass): $60

Savings: $143.20

D*mn that's a nice chunk of change.

PSA

Attention Excel users: You do not have to use the borders functionality on everything. Especially if all you want to do is have gridlines on your printout. And please don't select the entire spreadsheet and borders, this is why you have 80 extra, blank pages when you print the document. Use borders for emphasis.

Thanks.

Congrats!

Nbh got a web developer job! He starts Monday! (It must be e-contagious cause jhimm got a job this week and starts on Monday...hmm...;-)

And here's the jealousy part for me: It's 2.5 miles from the house and they encourage telecommuting. I have a one hour commute one way, folks. Grrr.

Three weeks ago: "I think I'll become a web developer (he has no web dev experience) so I can bring in a steady income while working on Wouldja Software." And then BAM! a decent job that fits almost all his requirements (small company, etc.). Gawd, how lucky can you freakin' get? Double grrr. I can only dream of working in our Framingham office which would be a 20 minute commute one way.

And Wouldja Software is humming along quite nicely......

jumping into the fray

So, I know that some of my friends who read this don't probably read blogs as a way to get their news. Instead, it's the MSM (Main Stream Media). As such, I've realized that even though I viewed this Sunday evening and didn't share then, I want to share now. Especially since it appears that the only "event" at the White House Correspondent's Dinner to the MSM was the Bush look-alike. It wasn't the only event. Stephen Colbert spoke, and at times it was pretty uncomfortable for me to watch, but I laughed anyway or was stunned at what he said in front of the president who was like, five feet away. Go. Watch or read it.

You can watch it (greater impact, in my opinion) or you can read it (still has impact, folks, don't get me wrong).

The Right says he bombed. The Left is prostrating themselves. Judge for yourself. I don't know who is correct, but it's a great piece of satire.

vacations

I really, really, really want to go to Antarctica. Have wanted to for most of my adult life. It's $$$$ to go, tho. So, like, we either have to start saving now or win the lottery. The former is doable. The latter, well, if I remembered to play.....

Anyway, I've been in a "I want to be elsewhere" mode for the past week. Our only vacation stuff planned this year are a 4-day weekend on 4th of July with friends in the Aidrondacks and 1.5 weeks in Los Angeles with family/friends/worldcon.

What was your favorite vacation(s), where did you go and why was it your favorite?
