tour of fenway park

Our department was taken out this afternoon for a tour of Fenway Park and then alcohol and munchies afterwards. I'm not a big baseball fan, but I was pretty excited to go. I mean, it's a historic landmark and in this town it's hard not to think of the Sox as your own. Sides, it was an afternoon away from work. Before we left the building(s) to board a bunch of trolleys to head over we were all given Red Sox baseball caps. It turned out to be a GREAT tour. Loved it.

It reminded me of the time I went to see a game many years ago. My friend Terry was in town and so nbh, Terry and I headed to a game because Terry is a big baseball fan. It was a beautiful day. The Sox won. It was a good time.

Ahhh....great way to start the weekend.

how'd you do?

Bush loyalty quiz.

My score:
Your score is 0 on a scale of 1 to 10. You hate Bush with a writhing passion. You think he is an idiot, a liar, and a warmonger who has been an utterly incompetent, miserable failure of a president. Nothing would give you greater pleasure than seeing him impeached and run out of the White House, except maybe seeing him dragged away in handcuffs.

various

* Nice to know that being away from the gym for 2.5 weeks I can remember my lock combination
* Mortified by a reply all e-mail sent to friends. Have lost sense of humor about it because of mortification. Because of this, cannot tell if people's responses are jokes or serious. Hopefully this will clear by the end of the day.
* Heard a radio recruitment ad yesterday for the Free Mason's. Not something I would think they'd do. Advertise. Maybe the younger generation doesn't care about this stuff anymore?
* Conversation on the subway the other day:
Female (looking snazzy and business-like): "Excuse me?"
Me: "yes?"
F: "Would you like this (shows me a card with Jesus on it and some inspirational words, etc.)?"
Me: "No thanks."
F: "Are you sure? It could really help."
Me: "I tried christianity, it didn't help. Thanks, tho."
F: "Do you know someone you could give this to who needs help?"
Me: "I'm very sorry, but I don't proselytize for strangers."
F: *blink* "ok." *moving away from me*

Paris, je t'aime

Sitting in the Paris airport. So sad to be leaving. Although our wallet is thankful. Paris is #2 (behind Oslo) for most expensive city in the world. And boy is it. But we knew that going in. We are in denial about how much we spent on this trip. I think that's the wisest course.

We have had the most wonderful weather while here. Every morning we woke up, looked out the window and said, "Yet another beautiful day in Paris." Spoiled are we.

More when we are home.

last night in the netherlands

OMG. We just came back from the best meal we've had this trip. And we've had some great food. If you're ever in Utrecht, you must go to Blauw. OMG. I ate so much my stomach hurts. After the walk back, I still feel full.

Tomorrow we shop around Utrecht and then catch the train to Paris! Vacation! Yay! There will probably be no more communications until I return.......

choices choices

While I wouldn't have minded going to some of the new Natick mall opening stuff this weekend (Can you say Apple store t-shirt with "Natick" on it? *sigh*), I think I prefer being in The Netherlands. :-)

We went out to dinner at a Thai restaurant in Amsterdam with some co-workers Thursday night. We tried something I'd never even heard of but it was awesome: steamed chicken curry. Steamed. I'm not even sure how to describe it except that it was gooood.

We are actually staying in the town of Utrecht which is about 40 or so minutes from Amsterdam. It's a lovely town. We plan on wandering around tomorrow and what's also awesome is that it's uitfeest which is an end of summer music festival held every year in Utrecht. We are taking the train into Amsterdam for sightseeing today.

Last night we went to a traditional Dutch pancake place (basically they're like crepes but thicker) along the canal. Think San Antonio river walk with tables right at the edge of the water. A few more inches and our chairs would have been in the drink. Anyway, nbh ordered an apple and bacon pancake. It was good. I was going to order the banana and cheese pancake but then chickened out.

Anyway, off to explore Amsterdam.....

going native

I was asked four times yesterday for directions. I guess I look like a Dutch person. I kinda felt bad for them cause I knew before they asked that they were going to and I was going to be absolutely NO help.

Three of these occurred as nbh and I wandered around downtown Utrecht (which is a lovely town). We finally found a department store that was open at 7:30p.m. so we could buy some jackets. It's cold here and we didn't bring jackets cause we're stupid and didn't check the weather forecast. Anyway, we found cool looking European style jackets and feel very continental and hip now. Hehe.

I've been reminded again about a theory I have about the Europeans. I've always figured that the reason why the stores close early (6p.m.!) on a week night is so that people will be forced to sit down for dinner with their friends and family. Which is always a good thing. It's not like you're going to be able to run errands so you might as well enjoy a good meal together!

And if you're ever in Utrecht, go to the tapas restaurant El Mundo. That was YUMMY.

on the first day no less

For those that know, I have a tendency when I rent a car in foreign countries to do something that is totally not cool. Driving on the cobbled sidewalks of Munich (hey, there weren't any signs saying the road had changed from a driving road to a enclosed mall!). Driving over a tiny roundabout in France. Yesterday? Took a wrong turn to get back to the hotel and ended up driving in the bus lane for three blocks, including what felt like the longest red light as people stared at me. I think a homeless guy did a double-take. I couldn't wait for the light to change so I could turn right and get back in with the regular traffic.

Yup. Definitely not in Kansas anymore, CF.
