my new favorite website

My friend Daniel linked to this blog post called "what would happen if you bought 25 bottles of Nyquil". I enjoyed the writing so much that I checked out some of her other entries. I'm hooked. I've had a lot of the same reactions to my abusive childhood as she had to hers. If you want to read honest writing from someone who is at times unforgiving, rude and mean but manages at other times to be whimsical, insightful and vulnerable, check it out.

happy thanksgiving!

Hope you all have a great holiday! For the first time I'll be eating Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant. Should be interesting. I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, my feelings that this is wrong are probably just because it's different. On the other, hey, chris's dad and his 2nd wife don't have to cook and if that's what they want, so be it!

the holiday season has started....

Gonna be busy this year. I'm debating taking off from christmas to the beginning of the year. I typically work during that time, but I've got enough vacation, family will be here, nbh is taking the time off.....hmm.

We've already got our first ski weekend planne for Stowe the weekend before xmas! yay! And then we're in Park City for a week in January seeing our friends K&M, skiing and attending Sundance! yay!

I'm getting excited about the holidays and fun. I want to bake christmas cookies RIGHT NOW!!!

Anyway, hope you are as lucky as me with your holiday season, friends and loved ones!

tide turning on anti-abortion advocacy?

Check it out.

"Some of the activists are actually working with abortion rights advocates to push for legislation in Congress that would provide pregnant women with health care, child care and money for education -- services that could encourage them to continue their pregnancies."

quantum of solace

Thoughts in the extended entry.

I liked it and it's an adrenalin rush, but it's not as good as casino royale. I do not want this director to direct the next one (I like his other films, but no more Bond please). The action sequences were very confusing because they were cutting from shot to shot way too quickly and unnecessarily. I also have issues with it because I can get motion sickness, fortunately, I didn't. There were flashes to the Craig humor and that was appreciated as that's part of his charm. I wanted more, but understood that he was out for revenge and there's not a lot of room for other emotions. Or at least that's my takeaway.

I still like the tougher, more physical and brutal Bond that Craig portrays. And I look forward to the next one.

what the heck is wrong with these parents?

You know the parents who have been dropping off their kids in Nebraska using their safe haven laws? Shame on you. In this article a mother says, "Don't judge me as a parent." Too late. "My son knows I love him." Yeah, cause nothing says love like abandonment. "There's no help." Really? Your church? Your town social services? Family? Friends? Parenting classes? Parent support groups? State social services?

It's amazing how your friends, family, church members, etc. can rise to the occasion when you ask for help. Parenting isn't easy, kids can be a pain in the ass and some of them have serious problems that need to be dealt with, but you're not alone. Even in your despair, you're not alone. I believe in humanity.

I have some friends who decided a long time ago to not have children. About eight years ago her sister's husband died, leaving her a single mother with a young girl. Her sister couldn't afford to stay where she was, so they opened their home to her and her girl. And then about three years ago, her sister died, leaving the young girl an orphan. What did my forty-seven year old friends do? Adopt her. And they love her with all their heart and they're great parents.

Reach out. Don't abandon your kid.

snark

Seen on a friend's twitter feed, "the problem with capitalism is that for the last decade it's had it's invisible hand in it's pants".

This blog post brought to you via iPhone while on the train.

epic fail

Every morning on the way to work I go through the Dunkin' Donuts drive-thru and get coffee. I decided to buy a refillable mug. I've been going long enough that they know "the usual". When I order and say, "I've got a refill" they reply "french vanilla, black, four splenda". I noticed this week that in order to speed up the drive-through process they've been filling their medium-sized styrofoam cup with my order so that by the time I get to the window they pour it into my refillable mug.

*smacks forehead*

obama for teh win

It's a sign of the times when you're sitting on the couch, next to your husband with your laptops and simultaneously IM'ing in a group chat, watching CNN, watching the live Daily Show and chit chatting with each other IRL.

We stayed up. I couldn't help myself. I had to hear Obama speak live. And as usual, I'm amazed at his ability to speak. He knows how to inspire using cadence, inflection and gestures. He's a preacher. Our faith is in change.

And McCain...his concession speech was classy and I almost saw what I liked about him in 2000. Maybe we'll get to see him return back to normal. And the difference between the crowds was a direct reflection on how both these men ran their campaigns: McCain got boos when he mentioned Obama and Obama got cheers when he mentioned McCain.

Obama has a lot of work ahead of him and I hope he can keep the momentum going.

halloween costume amusement

Didn't get a chance to blog about this on Halloween, but nbh got a trick or treater, about thirteen dressed as Palin and greeted him with, "Hi, I'm Sarah Palin! Don't vote for me!" I think she got extra candy.
